liebe freunde,

dear friends,
I`ve often heard that all is a question of motivation. People say that there is no use in doing something out of a wrong motivation. I agree with them regarding the statement that motivation is important. In sermon on the mount and in a lot of other passages Jesus reveals the wrong motives of the Pharisees. (e.g. Matthew 6,2) and makes clear, that there is a right attitude besides to do the right. It is a question of both.
Nevertheless, I´m of a different opinion regarding the consequences. In many cases you can hear: „If you talk about Jesus to have a good conscience then better break it off.“ or: „If you are donating only because you want others thinking generous about you then it is better keeping your money!“ or „If you read the bible only for the reason you think that it belongs to being a Christian then better stop.“
To think in this way is absolutely wrong! Motivation is wrong but doing those things is good! Why dropping something good? The right thing would be bringing the wrong motivation to the lord and let him change it but maintaining doing what is appropriate to Jesus. There I detect a trick of the devil to throw the baby out with the bath water.
In many cases it results in a dangerous conclusion which is prefering doing nothing instead of doing something out of a wrong motivation. Every Christ knows that. „If I´m only preaching for the reason standing in front of the church then it is better to stop it and go in the wilderness to get clean motives.“ That´s bullshit! Noone of us has clean motives up to 100% and if we are waiting for our motives to be complete pure then we will die before starting something for Jesus.
„But Paul is speaking: If I had all faith and all gifts and would do everthing in the right way but don´t have love it wouldn´t be of any use.“ No! He doesn´t say this. He says:
1. Corinthian 13,1-3 (New International Version) If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.
Naturally, every highlightening is made by me! I marked these words to make clear that it uses much to do something out of a wrong motivation. It doesn´t have any use for ME but indeed others have. If I preach out of an arrogant attitude and somebody gets newborn certainly this was of use for him. However, if you donate out of a false motivation it has its positive effects.
What I want to point out is following: We should refine our character and our motives while we are on the way. There may be situations in which a time-out is a good idea to get something under control, but usually it is better to build the kingdom of god during he is refining us.
Mostly god corrects us while we are on the way. No character ever was build in the study room. If motivation becomes a „categorical imperative“: „Whatever just do those things in which your motives can encounter every test“ we will never do anything for Jesus. If you realize that your motives aren´t correct change what has to be changed and don´t leave behind the good things! If you think that it doesn´t matter what you do read the sermon on the mount!
God with all of you!
